Although having “a roof over your head” is rightly considered to be one of the basic essentials for a happy life, we normally don’t give much thought to the one over ours . . . until something starts to go wrong. Living in an overwhelmingly dry and sunny climate like that of Las Cruces serves only to lessen our concerns.

But the sun, the heat, the dry air, and not to mention the wind in Las Cruces, have the same sorts of weathering effects on the roofing on our homes and businesses as regular rainfall and snow do in other areas. We just may not notice it until the rain finally does come and we discover that significant leaks and deterioration may have been developing for a ling time.

Regular roof inspections and maintenance are definitely not a bad idea. Making sure any roofing repairs, replacements or new installations are done correctly is something we pride ourselves on at Hard Hat Construction, to insure long term quality . . . and many more sunny, care-free days ahead.

Metal Roofs
in the form of corrugated, galvanized sheets, have been a standard features on barns and sheds for years. However, its popularity in the southwest, is growing each year. In particular, metal roofing is becoming more and more popular in snow country for its ability to allow snow to slide to the ground rather than building up on the roof. Typically made of steel, aluminum or copper, metal roofs can also be extremely attractive. For instance, many of the capital buildings in the southwest display gorgeous copper roofs. However, the biggest advantage for commercial properties is that the material is extremely light, weighing between one quarter and one half as much as other roofing material.

Advantages of metal roofing:
Fire Resistant: Metal roofing options are particularly resistant to fire when combined with a code-compliant underlayment
Attractive Options: Metal roofing offers many attractive options including steel, aluminum, copper, zinc and even copper (although copper is one of the most expensive options you can select). It also comes in all sorts of looks, including metal shingle/slate, metal tiles, metal shakes, metal vertical panels and more.
Resistant to Moss: Metal roofing materials are particularly useful in forested or moss prone areas that receive high precipitation.
Tough: Metal roofs are extremely resistant to high winds (a common problem in the southwest), as well as to hail and snow buildup. The metal also sheds rain well.
Long Life: Metal roofs have an extremely long life span — often as long as 50 years when properly installed.
Environmentally Friendly: In some cases metal roofing materials can be recycled.
Metal roofs are virtually maintenance free:
Metal roofing is just about maintenance-free. All you have to do is occasionally hose it down from the ground. However, if the roof is damaged due to wind or storm, it should be repaired by professional roofers immediately to prevent water leaks or other damage.

Tile Roofing
Concrete tile roof on Las Cruces home.
By far one of the most popular type of residential roofing in Las Cruces and most of the Southwest. One of the most obvious advantages of a tile roof is its beauty but there are many other advantages such as lowering energy costs. Tile is durable in harsh weather when properly installed, Class A fire rated and affordable.

While it is true that the tile themselves have a usable life of many decades, the materials underneath the tiles can suffer from weathering more quickly. Most repairs are related to removing the tiles, repairing or replacing the underlay and then returning the original tiles. In our frequently windy Las Cruces valley climate, it is also common to lose one or a few tiles.

Advantages of clay tile roofing
Of the many advantages of clay tile roofing, it durability is probably the biggest one. Any roofing material that can last for over 100 years has to be good! Another advantage is that it is available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, unlike regular shingles, adding more character and interest to the appearance of your home. It also has reflective properties, which help to increase the efficiency of heating and cooling systems. This type of material is not susceptible to mold or rot, can withstand hurricane-force winds, and does not shrink and expand with the temperature like wood.
Elastomeric coatings usually contain polymeric materials, such as acrylic, and a white pigment, such as titanium dioxide, to make them opaque and reflective. An elastomeric roof coating is applied thicker than paint.
